Invercargill's signals was made betimes oa the 17ih inst., and smart attention teing accorded her by the tit:r Koputai, she was towed in by noo >, and having ten tons -I powder on boaid, brought up in the usual place off Pulling Print one of the tine vessels of the Albion Co 's fleet, tho Inver-vrgill his nude the run out within average time, and is- in first rate cder all over— clean on deck and trim aloft, .-ho is still commanded by Captain Muir, and has broujrht a large cargo, amounting in the ag-rresjate to 19tO tons, of which 600 tons are dead w< iuht. iron, cement etc. Forty-two passengers hive come with the ship, and so far as it is possible for landsfxlks t • enjoy a sa'i p.issage, that which they have just c 'ncluded, was anything but unpleasant to them. They received every attention at the hands of Captain Muir and his officers, and good fellowship generally prevailed. According to the master's private log, the Invercargill sailed from Gravesend on the even ng of May 19th,

bntcameto a few hours in Princes Channel for' the night, then towed down ■to Deal, where the pilot and steam-tug made their adieus, and the ship stood down Channel under all pl»in sail, with the wind at N.N.K. On the 22nd she took her departure from the Lizard, and very soon after had to brace up to a change of wind to S.W., and then until she sighted Madeira on the 2nd June and there found the N.E. Trade her yards were hard upon the backstays. Tho Trade proved favourable on the while, and gave out on the 13th, lat 930 N. Days of doldrum weather followed, calms and light airs prevailing until the 22ud, when she met the S.E. Trade in lat. 2.5 N., and next d*y crossed the Equator, Jon^'. 25 30. The Trade was steady and free, and left the ship 'in latitude 22 50 S., long. 32.49 W* From that position the Invercargill contended with easterly and baffling winds, until she touched the 23rd meridian east. July 10th saw her across the meridian of Greenwich, lat. 38 41, and five day 3 later she breasted the Cape of Good Hope, Ut. 40.24. During the ensuing twelve days the winds were simply wretched, but at last on July 27th she was ciught by the westerlies, and commenced to knock off her easting. Once with her, the westerlies did their duty thoroughly and well. Splendid running was made, and on the 2nd inst. she crossed the meridian of the Leuwin, lat. 45.57, and was up with Tasmania by the 7th. There the winds broke, and a heavy N.E. gale set in, to which the ship head-reached under lower tepsails for 24 hours, ihe gale- abated as suddenly as it arose, and the wind went round by the cist and south to the westward again, took her to within sight of the Snares at 7 a.m. on the 12th.' Thence she worked down against light northerly weather, and made tha Heads on Friday morning. The ship made hir easting between the 44th and 46th parallels, sighting no ice by the way— neither wens any ve-seis communicated with or land sighted after Madeira, was passed. Considering the head winds she encountered at the outset of the p«.s>sasie, and between the southern limit < f the S. E. Trade Delt and the 23r,l meridian ea*t, whilst the equatorial doldrums proved more than usually fickle and provoking, the Invercargill made a very excellent passage as regards time, 88 days from port to port, and 81 from land to land. It was aho a fine weather one throughout. The mysterious death of ons master, and the equally mysterious illness of another, necessitating the ship calling at Queenscliffe to land him, brought the Alumbagh into considerable notoriety. All sorts of rumours were current, but nothing cime of the investigation, and the ship, which was bound from New. castle to Tut'corin with" 1700 tons of coal, and when at list she g.jt away on the 24th of hist month from Queouscliffe with a new master— Captain F. Moore — on board, it was hoped the Use had been he<ird of her fov a time. But four days later she again turne I up, returning to Queenscliffe in a leaky condition, with her crew in a state of insubordination. It appears that the ship was reported leaky before she sailed, but investigations led to the belief tint she was fit to prosecute her voyage, and to sea she went. But v/hen off Cape Otway she encountered a succession of heavy N.W. gales, and commenced to make water with a vengeaace ; »nd being deeply laden, she shipped sea after sea over all, filiiiiir her decks and flooding the cabin. At first hhe leaked at the rate of 4in per hour, and subsequsntly, in spite of pumping, gained 2ft in six hours. The crew refused to pioceed farther in her, and atited their intention in a respectfully-worded letter to the captain; and as all he said had no effect ia altering their determination, she was run back to Queenscliffe onihe2Bth; and, to quote the >»rgus, "it will be necessary to hold a survey, and place her in a thoroughly ssaworthy condition."
