TROTTING IN ENGLAND.

A match which has been on the tapis for nearly a month, and has created more excitement and interest in the trotting world than anything of the kind for years past, was brought to a satisfactory conclusion on Monday, July 10, Mr. J. Rooke putting down the "hundred" for the mare, Steel Grey, while Mr. Lithgard did the same on the part of Time. Steel Grey, for a long time previous, had proved herself to be the absolutely best pony of her inches that ever trotted in America, or elsewhere, her marvellous performance of trotting ten miles 27:56£ never having been approached, hence the present match, the conditions of which were — Mr. J. Rooke backed the "Grey" to trot five miles in 14im., Mr. Lithgard,. of Mancheater, backing Time ; he, like many others, thinking the foat almost an impossible one, more especially when the Lillie Bridge track, with its short bends and corners, was chosen for the great task. Steel Grey is now in her tenth year, stands 14 hands 1£ inches in height, and, perhaps, for perfection of conformation has no superior. She accomplished the task set her without being in the least distressed in 14:14, the mare thus winning by 16s. The miles were finished in the following time : 2:63— 2:45— 2:57— 2:52—2:47, a total of 14:14.
