VERY SPOONEY.

Ahumorous writer in the Grp.ymouth Star relates the following as illustrative of the difficulty of keeping high resolves. He Bays :—: — "I was cogitating deeply on this question the other evening, reclining meanwhile between the stacks of timber that grace the wharf, when my reverie was interrupted by voices. The conversation emanated from a pair of lovers about to part. The lady was going on a sea voyage. The young man exclaimed with pathos, 'And so you are going to leave me in the morning, dearest ; ana I may never see your sweet 'ace again.' To which she replied, ' You will forget me ; some other image will quickly replace mine upon your heart.' ' Never,' exclaimed tho enraptured swain, ' let me prove my devotion ; what can Ido to show you how I love you ?' ' You cannot do anything,' rejoined the maiden, ' except you get up in the morning to say good bye, and bring a nosegay as a memento of my stay iv Greymoutb.' Then the couple passed out ot hearing, and I thought I would see the finish of this gushing episode. The next morning I arose early aud took up my usual station. About a quarter past ten that youth arrived on the wharf, and looking sorrowfully at the place where the steamer had been berthed the previous evening, he exclaimed, ' I could have done a great deal for that dear departed, but getting up at five o'clock in the morning was hardly good enough,' and so, with a tear trickling down the side of his nose, the young man leit."
