LOCAL INDUSTRIES.
Messrs A. and T. Buvt are at present turning out a large quantity of plant of various descriptions for different parts of the Colony. For the Wellington Water Works they are making a double hydrant and single hydrant, for fire and street-watering purposes. One of them has the universal joint similar to that in the Dunedin hydrant, and has also what is called the half-turn, by which the labour of screwing the water on and off, and, what is valuable at a fire, time, are saved. This hydrant is similar to those used in the Glasgow Fire Brigade. A set of brewers' corking machines and bottling syphons has been finished for Messrs Keast and M'Carthy, and another is being made for Mr JLrodson of Blenheim. For the latter they are also making a double- action force-pump, similar to those in use at the Distillery and Messrs Marshall and Copeland'a. They are manufactoring a quantity of brewers' plant for Messrs Pascoe and Co., and Messrs Shepherd Bros, of Wellington. Brass ferrules, which are used for connecting service-pipe's to water-mains, and which were formerly imported, are now made at the factoiy, and a large order for Wellington is being executed. A water-engine is being made for Mr Willeston, tobacconist. Wellington ; and another for Messrs J. and H. Barber, butchers, of the same place. A l.irge glue - boiler of copper, tinned inside, and protected on the outside by a casing of boiler plate, is being made for Mr Hornsbrook, of Christchurch. A water engine is being n a 'c for Mr Humffray, George street. A ctmpact arrangement, worthy of special notice, is a soda-water machine, to be used in country hotels. A number of them are being manufactured — for, we are informed, the first time here. Messrs Burt will soon be carrying on their manufacturing business in the premises in Cumberland street at present occupied by Messrs Sparrow and Co. Additions will be made to the present premises, and the building as altered will have a frontage of 66ft. to Cumberland street, by a depth of 120 ft., and will be two storeys high ia front. Besides the manufacture of copper and brass goods, the manufacture of lead pipe will also be carried on, the machinery for the lead pipe making being already here, and a large amount of lead hasbeenmelted into ingots preparatory to commencing work.
