Markets.
Witness Ojfftcit, Thursday Morning.
Business houses report favourably of the market since our lust. Trade is brisk, but remunerative pnets for certain classes of goods -say, especially oilmen's stotus -are difficult to be got, the cause being, no doubt, a tendency to stocks becoming heavy. On Thursday last, Messrs Jl'Liuidress, Hepburn, and Co , offered by auction the cargo
suifiir just arrived from Mauritius-, ex nreuda, and imported b\ Messrs H. J. (Jibhs and Co As usual, there was a full muster of the trade, and with, he exception of three small lots, the whole eirgo, amouiitinif to 13,110 pockets, was sold at prices which may be considered a decline in late sales of 10s to 20s per ton on uicdluiu to I'mest yellow crystals, a similar decline in medium to fuio white crystals, and a s i^ht advance in tho tiiicst v\ hte crystals. Brewing crystals, liaUig an cxcejitioniil ' no sold at. low prices, considering the superior quality. The following wore tho prices realised :-- Brown crysta's, fls ; medium to due yellow crystals, £31 10s to €.'J3 ; finest yellow crystals, a:U 2s (id ; dingy nvey crystals, £34 2s (id ; medium to line white crystals, £35 to t3O 2s Cd ; finest white ' crystals, £37 7s Od : and browing crystals, £35 5s to I £35 10s — all in bond. In tea, thore is nothing of importance in transactions to note. The supply of new season's ten.s for tho year may bo siiid to be complete, and a quiet, satisfactory enough enquiry proceeds. Bottled ale continues; han?. In bulk, a small parcel of Bass's new Ivivw has been received from Melbourne thi* week, Brandy, Hennessey's-, is bumy j\iduooil in stock, which should help importow to got tho greatly onhaiu-ed cost. Tho present quotation, 30s in ease, barely gives that. Thero is the prospect of its being now shipped more freely ; but the price i.s enormous, and only by .stocks remaining rather low will importers be ablo to ostublish a .sufficient advance. All other spirits remain dull. In tobacco, wo havo nothing to report, since tlu 1 considerable shipments of Camerons, which we lately noticed, a.s having been severally placed in one line. There is now landing from the East Lothian, a parcel of Now Zealand Joys and Over the Water, which, .short-shippod for some littlo while, may jo oxpected to bo In demand. Buttor, of good quality, continues ficarco, with an upward tendency. Cho^c Is in good enqujvy. Coruaacks continue }n eu« <\ulry, prlee.B flrra. Hoys are, iv\\ w*. Jian^n * Jn
fencing wire, stocks arc full, but the demand s-tsady. Flour remains dull, at £11 15s in sacks, £12 6s in small bags. Bakers keep barely supplied, expecting a reduction with new wheat. Should the demand for shipping equal anticipations, they may be disappointed hi this expectation. In wheat, the only sample of new as yet seen was offered the other day at 4s 6d, the price at which large sales are being made in Christchurch. Oats are not offering. Bran remains scarce at £4 10s.
