LOSS OF LARGE ATLANTIC LINERS.
The Ville dv Havre is the fourteenth largo Atlantic liner totally lost, with great sacrifice of life, since 1640. The first great disaster of th.s- clash was that which occurred to the Governor Fcnncr, bound from Liverpool to New York, which was run down off Holyhcad in February, 1811, when 122 persons perished. The President, as far as known, foundered in the following month. In August, 18-iS, the Ocean Monaich was burned i off Great Onnc's Head a few hours after leaving Liverpool, and 17S lives were sacrificed. On Christmas Eve, 1852, the St. George, from Liverpool to New York, urus burned at sea, v\ith about 50 persons. The Geoige Canning, coming out from Hamburg, was lost, with !)(> lives, on New Year's Day, 1855. The I'a.eifie, which vvfts the first steamer ti cross tlie Atlantic in less than ten days, dis.ippcaiod v\ith Wo 1 passengers and crew in 185(5, being supposed to have struck on an iceberg. The Austria was burned in mid-ocean, v\ ith 471 souls on board, m September, 1S.">8 ; and the Indian was lost off Newfoundland with 27 lives, in November, IS.iO. The Hungarian, with 20.") persons, went down near the coast of Nova Scotia in February, ISUO ; and 240 lives were lost in tho wreck of the Anglo-Saxon off Cape Race in April, 1803. The City of Boston wa.s probably wrecked on an iceberg in Febnury, 1870, with several hundred victim 1 -, not one of whom has been heard of .since. 24 perished in tho wreck of the German ia, off La Rochelle, in December last. The collision between the Northfleot and the Murillo in January caused a loss of 350 li\ es, and about 500 were sacrificd in the wreck of the Atlantic on tho Ist of April.
