San Francisco, July 20th. A great riot took place in New York on July 20th, the Roman Catholic Irish turning out in immense force to prevent violence by the Orangemen during their procession on the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne. The National Guard and the police -were tired upon by the mob of Irish, numbering several thousands. The troops swept the streets with musketry tire, killing from 60 to 100 of the rioters, and wounding from 300 to 400 more, many mortally. The police arrested many of the rioters, who will be tried. They also seized a great quantity of arms at the head-quarters of the Order of Hibernians. The riot was crushed immediately. This affair has caused intense feeling throughout the United States, reviving the old anti-Catholic sentiment. A terrible railway accident took place at Nashville, Tennessee, by which 15 persons were killed, and 23 wounded. The Fourth of July was celebrated spiritedly throughout the United States, 1 and but few casualties took place. A procession in honour of the 25th anniversary of the Pontificate of. Pius IX. took place in San Francisco on July 2nd, j and was an imposing affair, being composed of 14,000 people. The Italians in San Francisco will cele { brate the occupation of Home as the apital of Italy by a procession on S\mday next. Active preparations against the Apaches have been commenced by the American troops in Arizona, acting in conjunction with the Mexican troops in Sonora. The New Zealand beer received by the last steamer was well liked in San Francisco. The samples of Ncav Zealand hemp (sc. flax) were highly approved of, and s quantity could be sold here at £22 to £24 per ton of 2000 lbs.
