CHRISTCHURCH, August 16th.

A little girl, aged seven years, daughter of a man named Patrick, has been drowned in tho river Avon.

At a large meeting held last night, it was resolved to petition the General Assembly to pass a Permissive Bill The police have discovered illicit stills in the establishments of seven photographers in the city. Clara Nocks has been committed for trial on a charge of perjury in an affiliation case.

The Scott Centenary celebration will take place to-morrow at Lyttelton. Preparations were being made to-day for its celebration in Christchurch.
