LAND RESOLUTIONS.
The resolutions which -were submitted by Mr Ba.tL.gate were re-considered in Committee, Clauses o\ and 32 w, re carried. On clause o',> being i;ubmitt"d, Mr ALLAN" suggested Lli.it in tlih clause, which reform to the "right to search for gold reserved," provision should be made that any portion who anight sustain damage by another person
or persons prospecting for goM on his land should be compensated for surface daw.e-i. Sir EUD regarded the suggestion as v valuable one. He also btatod, in reply to some remarks made by an honourable member on the opposite side of the [louse, that the Government would s-übmit a clause J .o follow clause 33. .and to provide for compensation to be bottled by arbitration. Olau&es G!>, 3-1, and 35 were p:.s j ed af er some trifling amendments had been made. Clause oG, referring to the rates of compensation, was po-tnonod to ena 'le the Provincial Solicitor (Mr Bathiralo) to alter the clause so that it shall give effect to some suggestions made regarding compensation. Clause 37 was carried. Clause 38 was amended. The side note reads " Where no agreement compensation settled by arbitration. Mr Bathgate moved that the clause be amended as follows : — To strike out the words "for the purpose of ascertaining thf viiliiaoi improvements," and to introduce in i/heir stu d the words " and such compensation when ascertained shall be paid as provided in the 37i<h section of this Act." The clause was amended to that extent, pnd crried as amended. Clauses 30 to 55 inc'usive were, passod after some verbal amendments had been agreed to. At half-past five o'clock progress was reported, and leave to ait again obtai >cd. The House then adjourned for refreshj ment.
