THE UNIVERSITY.
Mr BATHGATE, in reply to His Honour's letter of the 10th inst. moved + he following resolutions, notice of which I ho hid given during the afternoon sitting : — " That whereas the eil' >^ts of the Council of the University of Ofcago to carry through amalgamation with the University of New Zealand upon an equitable basis, consistent with due regard to the importa\-it trust confided to the said Council, have not been successful, and whereas the University of Otaj;o is at present endowed exclusively from Provincial revenue, and there is a considerable amount of the Colonial revenue appropriated to the support ot Universities in the colony, this Council is of opinion :—: — " 1, That the action of the Council of the University cf Otago. in pro'ec/ing and maintaining the rights and j ri\ i'e'.'es entrusted t" their care, is highly saUsf-ctory, and such : 3 merits the cordial approval of this C uncil and tht) people generally. " 2, That tho University of Ota-o is justly entitled to a shu re ot the Colonial Approrriation, in proportion to the populatk n of tho uroviucc.
