CURIOSITIES OF ADVERTISING.
Our American cousins certainly beat us in the curiosities of advertising. We have before us a San Francisco paper, and amongst other items we find, under the head of " Stock Review" remarks on the business done in particular mining shares the nomenclature of which, and the accompanying description, are rather amusing. For instance. " Savage has improved" — a casual reader might innocently think this referred to the "Native question," and while congratulating his Californian cousins on bo desirable a oircumstance as the improvement of the "noble savage," mourn that New Zealand papers can make no such announcement.
Next we read:— "Uncle Sam has advanced, but fell to-day ; some ,50 feet changed hands between boards at 750 dollars." One one certainly think that when Uncle >am went though the process described, a fall would be the inevitable consequence. The idea of feet changing hands between boards is, we fancy, even beyond the most ambitious hopes of ordinary •' prestidigitators.,"
"Lady Bryan has been actively dealt in," but her ladyship appears to have declined in value as she changed owners, opening at 70 dollars and finally succumbing to adverse circumstances at 43. It is satisfactory however to learn that she was expected to " rally."
We next read, what must certainly astound all financiers : — " Bullion is in less favor, and is freely offered " ! Bullion "in les3 favpr"! This must surely be the result of its being so " freely offered," and another instance of the folly of making oneself too cheap. Take advice, fair readers, and remember that if " l Bullion" is in less favor when freely offered, what must be your fate if in your gushing moments you should suddenly remember it is leap year. Take warning.
"Buckeye is weak and lower" — winking probably, or has a " stye" ; but some curative process seems to have been appl'ed, for, a little further on we have the satisfactory announcement that it " closed healthily."
History is evidently at fault, for we read that "Burning Moscow has been active."
The Best Sowing Machine Extant.— The practical farmer.
"Sawing" His Way.— A youn? man, a native of 'fundee, who went to Cliina ns a carpenter's apprentice about nine years ago, writes to his parents that he is now a colonel in the Chinese Imperial army. It is said hi his native town that ne was a young man who always M sawed" his way through anything clearly.
