CAVERSHAM VOLUNTEERS.
An adjourned meeting of persons desirous of joining a Volunteer Company was held at the , K-inburgh Castle Hotel, Caversham, on Tuesday evening. There was a very good attending of , the residents of the district;,, besides the representatives of the several existing volunteer companies, who wtre present to afford any information that might be required. R. 8. Cantrkll, H>q., was voted to the ehatr, The minutes of the previous meeting having beea read, Mr H. Baxter reported that the comiaittee appointed at the last meeting had canvassed the listrict to ascertain which company would be moßt acceptable to the majority, and handed to the ehaii-man a list, of nam»-s from which it appeiw that the mnjority were in favor of the Naval Brigaue, but none of the persons who hadsubscribed to the list were pledged to any «ac company. Captaii F. Moss, of No. 1 Company, at the re- , quest of the Chairman, explained the position and privileges ot the Company under bis vommand. He said that there were about forty effective members of ihe Company. Every mem* ber on joining had to pay an entrance fee of tw« shillings and sixpence, and a monthly subscript tion of one shilling. Arras, uniforms, accoutrements, and drill instruction will be provided by Government free of charge, and he fully expeete^ that the Provincial Government would vote & sum of money for Volunteer purposes. If the Caversham attached themselves to No~l Comjinny, he would promise them every assistants ia his power. All that he hal stated applied equally to No. 2 Company o f Kifle Volunteers. Mr Kirkaldy, of No. 2 Company, said thatH was unnecessary for bira to enlarge upon the merit« of his Company, as the remarks made by Captain Moss would .-uit the purpose. In answ r to several questions, Lieut Mumford and Mr Dickbnboh, of the Naval Brigade, informed the meeting that the subscription to their Company was one shilling per week; that their uniform, which .cost four', pounds two shillings and sixpence, was at pretest paid for by the members of the Brigade; but that the General (Government would grant them one pond five shillings per annum for two years' in lien of clothing. Arms and accoutrements are supplied , to the Brigade free of charge, and they 8r« ki the same position with respect to drill instruetkn as the rifle companies."* The advantage gained a joining: their Brigade is, that the members -have the privilege of learning the rifle, big gun, and boat drills ; whereas persons joining No, lor No. 2 Company will only have the former. Mr Baxter proposed, and Mr Gbo. Mjtoeuba seconded, " That the Caversham Volunteers hecome a contingent to the Naval Brigade." An amendment proposed by Mr Lbaxt, " That the Caversham men form a contingent «f No. 2 Company of Rifle Volunteers," was carried by a majority of thirteen. It was resolved that the first meeting for iirlU instruction and the enrolment of new members should be held on Friday the 10th insi. Votes of thanks and three hearty cheers lor the several companies present, were given, and with the usual compliment to the Chairman the proceedings terminated.
