paid the salaries of Resident Magistrates and the general expenses, they claimed all fees and fines taken and recovered before the various benches of Magistrates in Otago. Mr A dam consented to 1 iy on the table the return moved for by Mr Mollison, of thevirious toll bars in the Province. They would be let by tender when the Turnpike Act waj passed. The Caversham and Green Inland District Roads Lands Bill was read a first time, and ordered to be printed. The second reading was made an order of the day for the next sitting. Mr A bam's motion for setting as'dc a portion of the To vn Helt for the use of the d.cc!imati;>a tion Society was agreed to. Mr Vc.oel's motion for requesting LSOO to be plac.d on the Estimates to meet the expenses of seUin« the waste and lown laiWs by auction, was negatived. > The motion by Mr JonN Caroill, requestiug the Superintendent to forward a copy ot the reI port on the Volunteer Force to the General Government, and ask their co-operation, was agreed to. Mr Voqbl moved thit the Superintendent be requested to disa'low the Licensed Hawkers Bill. The Speaker intimated that it had already been assented to. Mr Adam admitted the oppressive nature of the '20th clause, and said the Government ha>l not decided on the matter. James Gordon Stuart Grant was placed at the bar of the House in custody. After some d : scu3sion it was agreed to accept his apology for the contempt offered to rhe House, and the prisoner having apologist d to the satisfac of the House was released. Mr Gillibs, in the absence of Mr E. B. Cargill, laid on the table the report of the Select Committee on the application by the Town Board of the grant of LIO 000 and the loan of L 35 000 The consideration of the Turnpikes Ordinance Amendment Bill was postponed to the evening. The House went into Committee on the Cattle Bill, and several clauses were passed with slight amendments, previously to tho adjournment at half-past five o'clock. On reassembUng, the discussion of the Cattle Bill was resumed in Committee, and it was ultimately withdrawn. The Turnpikes Amendment Ordinance wa9 recommitted. After some important alterations, it was read a third time and passed. The House then went into Committee of Supply. Mr Voqbl's motion, recommending the Government not to enter into any unauthorised expenditure, unless of great necessity, was carried ; and on the resumption of the House for the purpose, adopted. On going again into Committed of Supply, the Committee passed a great number of items on the Estimates, and shortly after one o'clock the House adjourned.
