fields than the croakers would have us believe. It is understood that extensive operations in hydraulic as well as ordinary sluicing will be undertaken upon the terraces in the spring, and this will atibrd employment to a large number of men. Water races upon a large scale will be formed, and new gold fields will, no doubt, be discovered, so that the future is by no means gloomy. Stocks upoi the gold fields are now very low, and the Pelorns rush bein; ior the present at an end, storekeepers will at once order goods, with a certaiuty of disposing of them to advantage. An unusual ouantity of timber and other building materials nave been sent up country during the last two or three waeks. In general merchandise there has been no great change since last week* The state of the flour market gives some uneasiness, as, if supplies do not soon arrive, there will be a considerable advance. Adelaide is now worth £32 to £34, and some is held for £35. Hennessey's and Martell's brandy is very scarce, and the price has materially advanced. Sugar is firm at £41 per ton for white crystals; £37 for first counters; and £33 10s for second counters. Low to medium teas in chests, £7 to £8 10s duty paid ; half-chests, £3 to £3 155. • Fuil-weight sperm candles, Is Old ; light, 9£d to lOd; best Cork butter, lOJd to lljdcolonial, Is 3d; bacon and hams, Is l|d to Is 3d; English cheese, Is Id to Is 2d ; colonial, lsOJd toIs Id. DUNEDIN PRODUCE REPORT. May 27, 1864. The ground is now in a much more favorable condition for ploughing, and the work is proceeding rapidly. Many of the farmers who had intended to have threshed out then* oats, are now thatching it, determined on reserving it for an advance in price. It would be greatly to the advantage of the farmer, and of benefit to the city, if a piece of ground were set apart for a market, temporary sheds erected, and certain days appointed for the sale of agricultural produce. Much valuable time would be saved, prices would be more uniform, the farmer would be enabled to count with greater certainty upon regular returns, and instead of, as at present, speculating upon his corn, he might by the end of the year obtain a fair average price. Fanners and gardeners residing within a few miles of Dunedin are reminded of the advantages they enjoy in being enabled to obtain various kinds of manure, which can be conveyed to their land by the teams which bring their produce to town. It is this, with the vicinity of a good market, which enhances the value of land near all large towns and cities. 1 1 is to be feared that many of our farmers do not fully appreciate the value of town sewage and other manures to be obtained here, literally for nothing. The late fine weather has been most fevorahle for carting to the laud. While in its removal they would be conferring a great benefit upon the town, they would be increasing the value as well as the produce of their farms. A small quantity, arrived during the week from Tasmania, sold for £20, which may now be quoted as the market price. Potatoes.— Stocks in town are considerably reduced^and prices firmer. One lot of imported sold on Wednesday at auction for £8. Wheat.— The stock is held by one house, and we can quote no sales. CARTAGE REPORT. May 27, 1864. Messrs E. De Carle and Co., carriers and general forwarding agents, report as under : — Only a week has elapsed since we had to report a revolution in the sentiments of a large number of the mining population of Otago, causing them to leave its shores. It is gratifying now to state that adeddeH reaction has taken place, and our up-country friends will see many old faces, lookmg far more satisfied with the old diggings, now that the new have been tried and found wanting.
