TO TIIE ELECTOKS OF WALLACE. / 1 ENTLEMEN,— I trust that my acceptance of a VJT seat in Mr Domett's Government will have received the approval of my eou&tituents, and that our course during the session will have been held by you to justify a continuance of your confidence, hitherto so geuerously placed in me as one of jour representatives. Gentlemen, we did not pretend, as Ministers, to invent grand schemes of policy. We v>ere imperatively called to take oflice, because our predecessors had abandoned their posts, aud we came in as plain men of business, -with some official experience, to do our best to fulfil a plain duty— without giving ourselves airs, or having any ambition to undurfcfike what we could no! carry out. In Native affairs we declined to assume a responsibility which, uuder existing circumstances, could only have been a dangerous pretence. Our object wns simply to afford Sir Gcoi^e Grey that co-operation and assistance, — iv legislation, in the craut of money, and in tie ordinary business of legislation, -which he was entitled to claim from the colonists, iv the prosecution of the Imperial Policy fur the pacification of the country. We admitted that the time would come when we might in reality, as well as in name, bay tint we could govern the Native people ; when we should have to ask neither money nor men from England ; and when the Imperial Government could with justice and good faith transfer duty, responsibility, and power to us ; bnt we said that time was not yet come. In other public affairs our nim was to improve the business of General Government administration, and specially to remove the complaint hitherto justly made, aud beliovul to be the necessary result of a distant seat of Government, that proper attention to the wants and interests of the Soutii vai constantly postponed to the necessities of the Noith. A Ministry knowii'g and caring for Southern interests, mny, with a good steam service, transact promptly and reKulnr.y, such Middle Island business as requiies General Government action, and, in this belief, I voted against the proposed removal of the General Government to Weliiugton.
