THE STEAMSHIP STEAMSHIP GOTHENBURG.
Since her arrival at. Port Chalmers, this new addition to MVssi-s. M'Meokan and Black wood's fleet of steamers ha« been inspected by numei'ous visitors. and has elicited the admiration of all by her proportions, and her ample accommodation for passengers aud ear<?o. Until time permits for a more lenirthy description of the vessel, we quote from tlie 3\li'lbourne A rgus the following account of her trial tiip in Hobson's Bay,, which contains also particular of her dimensions m\>\ fittiiigs : — " On Saturday last, n numerous party of ger. tinmen interested in tlie trade between Victoria and New Zealand (iucliriins 1 strangers fVorn the latter), met on feoard tlie steamship Gothonbui'g'jbr the invitation of her owners. Mavis. M'Menknn, lihekwood, and Co.. for th • trial trip of thi-t latest ad<iition to the iro-i steam merchant flpet of Melbourne. The Gothenburg, it will' lie recollected, arrived only a few days. aj£o from London, after a somewhat protracted"passnofc. Slnca thon she hai befn clisihrnptod of a lartre car^o, Inkcn on the patent slip to scrape and nainf her hull, ship her propeller, and prepare for the Otup;o and Melbourne tr.'ide, in which she is hereafter to t.e employed. The preparation of the ship, therefore, ha» nee/essaniy bceu hurried, and her trial trip wns madi' under every disadvantage. It is sufficient on this head to say that she was seven feet deep by the stern, aud that bring so much out of trim, it was not expected that her full steaming capacity would bs determined. The result of the short cfuise, however, vms sufficient to show that a very 'fast and finn sea-going steamer has'beon secured for this colony, and one which will do her spirited owner's credit. The gnasts found tho Gothenburg lyin« alongside the Railway Pier, at Sandridge, with colours flyina and steam up, and about one o'clock she was cast off from the wharf and under way. It was intended to round tbe Swan Spit lightship, and between the lightship off GKllibrand's Point and the Swan Spit, tlie Gfothenburg was timed both out and in. A smart southeasterly breeze was blowing, but with tins'disadvantage the distance between the two light shins — which is between twenty-one and twenty-two nautical miles — was done in two ho'ius find eight minutes on the outward ran, and two hours and three mini tjs on the return. 1 Jiis was ascertained to be only a few minutes more than the time occupied by the Aldinga on.her first run over the Fame ground, a'faebwhich speaks well for the new ship. An elegant cold collation was provided on board — there was no stint to ihe hospitality of Messrs. M'Meckan, Bhckwood, and Co., — and success to tbe ow era,- the ship, and the colonies Which she is to assist in competing in bonds of trade, ,was duly toasted. The Gothenburg was built and engjned by Mr. Scott Russell, on the Thames. Her engines are oscillating, and of 120horse power. Her burthen is 800 tons, and she can carry some forty or fifty cabin, and some 300 steerage passengers. Her cabins are unusually large, and lofty, and as they are situated amidships, they are likely to be found extremely comfortable at sea. Unlike any other steamer in the trade, the Gothenburg - has a flush deok, so constructed ns to give great strength to the ship, flic is commanded by CaptainMa'ckiej lately first officer of the Aldinga, who has well deserved the promotion in the service winch he has now 'attained. . The' mission of the Gothenburg especially, after the trip on which she starts on Wednesday next, will be to carry the mails between Melbourne aud Otago, for which her power and speed well adapt her. We arc glad to understand that she will shortly he followed from , England by another steamship which has been added to the fine fleet owned by Messrs, M'Meckan, Black wood and Co.'' A search was iniiilo around as sor<n as day broke, and a bunch of skeleton keys was found. The keys were beautifully made, and would open half the doors in Duhodiri. They have been tried in several, and found to open them with ease.
