OBITUARY

SISTER M. VALERIAN j The sad news reached Otaki on Monday of the death of Sister M. Valerian, daughter of the late Mr. Walter Vaughan, and Mrs. M. Vaughan, of Otaki. | The deceased, who was very popular j and noted for her many kindly acts, j had been in indifferent health for some ! time, and finally entered Lewisham I hospital, where she passed peacefully j away. Sister Valerian, popularly known in her younger days as “Tutsy.” had [ resided in Otaki for many years, receiving her education here. She entered the Sisters of Mercy nineteen years ago and for eleven years was at Upper Hutt, where she was highly esteemed. .Most of her time was spent in caring and educating the orphans, a work she loved. The funeral, which took place a* Karen, was very representative, among those present being a number of Sisters, and a large gathering of orphans from the Lower Hutt, who formed a guard of honour as the coffin left the church. The ceremony was a most impressive one, and will'long linger in the memory of those wife attended. Mrs. Vaughan and relatives have been the recipients of a number of sympathetic messages. MR. The late Mr. Henry Stewart, who passed away at- Otaki on Saturday, was born in Birmingham, and lived most of his life in Kidderminster. He married jin June, 1887. and left for Xew Zeaj land two days later in the steamship “Doric,” arriving in Wellington on Sth I August. A month later, he left for Eketahuna. where he acquired a block of bush land, and after a residence of 24 years in that district, retired to take up residence in Otaki, where he had resided for 33 years. He celebrated his I golden wedding in 1939. 1 The late Mr. Stewart was very popular, and gained many friends by his quiet, unassuming nature, and his death came as a shock to his many friends. Mr. Stewart always took a keen interest in sport, and in cricketing circles proved a great enthusiast. The funeral of the late Mr. Stewart took place on Monday' afternoon when there was a representative cortege. Canon Fry conducted an impressive ceremony.
