Stock Notes.
Wu are not inclined, as a rule, to be pessimistic, but there is no use hiding the fact that the stock market m all its branches, nofi only m Southland, but also m the northern provinces, has received a sevcro set-back during the last month or so, owing to the discouraging state of tne weather that has prevailed. As regards the fat market, of late the supply has exceeded the demand,- and the butchers have therefore Dad it all to themselves, so it may recover when tho Freezing Works re-open iv February aud exporters come into competition but we fear the store division will differ somewhat, for, from all aouuuuts, the
best we can hope tor is half a crop of winter feed, consequently thousands of sheep and cattle will be forced on the market that under more favourable circumstances would ha\e gone through the Works ; nor from what we can gather, can we rely on help from our northern friends to anything near the extent of former years, for unfortun"ately both their rape and turnip crops are -sadly disappointing. On the other hand we understand that .they have sustained severe losses m their breeding flocks, and are fairiy certain customers for young ewes, thus once more illustrating tho proverb : " Its an ill wind that blows nobody good."
