*• — - From Our own Correspondent. The weather is givimj every indication 1 of a fine day for Wairio Races on Wednesday. The sporting members, of die community are m the majority on Wairi.; K actDay, unless recent events affect tlie minds of some, this year will have no exception to the rule. War and epidemic havo apparently not affected the sporting spirit of men and women. The recent, epidemic caused so many applications for relief to be made among tho members of the Miners Union that the Sick and Accident .Fuud failed. The are now applying to the Government for £100 to relieve the situation, as some members have been off work a considerable time and have drawn no pay. Included m the list of prize winners at tl.B Invcreargill Secondary -Schools each year aie almost always found names of Scholars from hero. This is very gratifying 1.0 the headmaster of Nightcaps P. blic .School, Mi*. J. Gray, who takes an interest m the future career of ah his scholars who have passed through his hands. This year Master Reginald Wakeling has his name down for tlireo prizes, French, Draw.ing and Science at Southland Boy's High School. This scholar travels daily from Nightcaps. Miss Agnes Spence secured a first prize for Algebra iv her class. Sire is , another daily train scholar. The arrival home from the war last night Privates Bert Leo, and R. Gibbon, Lancecorporal W. Wilson, Military Medallist. The Railway platform was fairly well crowded at the arrival of the train.
