Oh, the King o' Berlin, he's proud and he's great; ' . - He wanted to widen the bounds o' his [ State; He wanted an Empire as big as the moon, And a Koh-i-noor diamond to put m his croon. Now, over his border a lady did dwell, A. neighbor wha thought a lot o' hersel' ; He wanted her land—for it looked to the sea-— This fortunate lass wit he lang pedigree. He waxed his moustache, and he dressed hastily, Then' rode ower the border his neighbor to see. "Gae tell Mistress Belgium,»and tell her to ' rin, For she's wanted to speak to the King o' Berlin," ■- Mistress Belgium was proud, and took her am time. " Tak' the King a drink o' my quid Flanders wine; I ken what he wants — tho' he offers his hand— • For he's lang envied me o? my wee bit o' land.-* And noo when they met he soon let her know That through her fair- province he wanted to go. " Then to Paris, my lady, my way I must hack, But a ransom I'll gie ye as I journey back." Mistress Belgium was wroth, and she spake haughtily : "Ye hae sworn to protect me — your word is a lee! But there's ac thing about me ye canna' control— Ye may conquer my country, but never my soul." Oh, the King o' Berlin, he plundered and burned The fair toons o' Belgium: afore he was turned' ; But after he said, as he thought o' his sin : "She was daft to resist the King o' Berlin !*? As the years hurry by and the story.- is told How Belgium resisted a King and his gold, | We'll read 'mang the honors inscribed on ' the roll How Belgium lost a'thing, ibut keepifi her soul. T_ M.
