Southland Championships.

» OTAUTAU AGAIN SUCCESSFUL FOR THIRD YEAR. m NUMBER OF NEW CHAMPIONS. The third provincial championship meeting of Southland held in Invercargill on Wednesday, was not remarkable in point of attendance, only 700 persons being present, and it is hardly complimentary to Invercargill, when, according to figures, it is proved that close on this number were present at the first meeting of the kind, whioh was held at Otautau in 1910. A number of looal men assisted in running the meeting, in fact, did the lion's share of the work, to wit, Messrs J. G. Gow (president), Dr Stewart. D. Macpherson, R. Hazlett, and C. E. Robertson (starter and secretary). On Wednesday, the day was extremely hot, but a fierce gale spoilt what early promised to be a perfect day. The wind spoilt also what might have been some record performances, and for the hurdles and sprints, a new track had to be laid out in the morning, and the performances in these events, up-hill, and with a strong side-on wind, were of the first water. Tqe performances, except in the circular track events which were spoilt by the wind, were splendid, the following equalling or lettering standard time. • It may here be explained that a standard time or performance is a time fixed on by the authorities as being one of merit. The standard time is a set one, and does not change, and in some instances the standard has been set so high that it is seldom, if ever equalled, but again, in other instances, the standard is frequently being equalled or broken, which is so in the case of a hurdler like Keddell, or a hammer thrower like Kean. 120 hurdles, Southland Standard 16 4-5 sees, N.Z. Standard 16 1-5 sees, G.T*. Keddell 15 3-5 sees. 100yds flat, Southland Standard 10 2-5 sees, N.Z. Standard 10 1-5 sees, N. Saunders 10 1-5 sees. Pole Vault, Southland Standard, 10ft, N.Z. Standard 10ft 6ins, N. Whittaker 10ft 2ins, G. Giller 10ft. Broad Jump, Southland Standard 20ft 6ins, N.Z. Standard 21ft, F. M. Reid 20ft 6ins. Throwing 161b , Hammer, Southland Standard 120ft, N.Z. Standard 130ft, M. Kean 128ft 3Jins. In the following events, the previous Bests at the Southland Championships were bettered : Pole Vault (9ft 3f ins), 10ft 2ins ; Throwing Hammer (107ft 9 ns), 128ft 3£ins ; 'Broad Jump (20ft 3ins), 20ft 6ins ; Mile Walk (9min 41 3-5 sees), Bmin 0 2-5 sees ; Hop, Step and Jump (40ft 9ins) 42ft OJins ; 440yds Hurdles (64 2-5 sees) 64 1-5 sees. It will thus be seen that especially in the field events, -big improvements have been made during the year.
