School Vacations.

OTAUTAU.

The break-up of school for the year is always a very important event to Young New Zealand as represented by the pupils at onr public school. The, anticipation of a spell of freedom from disciplinary restraint, the claim attendant on the distribution of prizes, and the prospect of holidays and fun all go to make up a period crammed full of interest. On Friday at the Otautau Public School, there was a large muster of parents and friends at the distribution of prizes. Despite the prevalence of mumps, there was also a big attendance of pupils, nearly a dozen of whom had heads bound up as a result of the epidemic. Mr W. Saunders, chairman of the School Committee, presented the prizes, with suitable reference to individual cases of exceptional merit. The dux for the year is Angus Macdonald, and the presentation of the gold medal to this pupil was the occasion of enthusiastic applause. My launders referred to the anxiety felt by the Committee as to the success of the year owing to the many changes m the personnel of the staff ; they were, however, delighted at the success attained, and at the manner m which the prestige of the school had been maintained, and they congratulated Mr Robertson and hia staff accordingly.
