Otautau Young Hen's Club.
The adjourned meeting m connection with the formation of the above club was held m the band room last night, when there was a good attendance. Mr Ross occupied the chair, and having read the minutes of the previous meeting, called on Mr Thomson to say what had been done m regard to getting a copy of rules from some of tho clubs m Invercargill, and canvassing the township for a suitable place to meet it.
Mr Thomson said he had spoken to one or two members of the Invercargill Club m connection with this matter, and they had promised to send him a copy of their rules for perusal, which had not yet come to hand. As regards canvassing the town nothing had yet been done,
The Chairman : If no information is available it is for the meeting to say what steps should be taken m the matter. He thought they should take the necessary steps themselves, and if they could show the public that they intended to make a success of the club the would back them up.
Mr Malone said he was not present at the last meeting, and he would like to know what was the object of the club and the idea of canvassing. They would want to decide what course the club was going to take.
The Chairman : The idea of canvassing was to procure a building, and, failing that, a suitable room m the meantime, for the young men of the township to meet m during the winter evenings. Various games, etc, would be provided, and altogether a very good time could be spent. s The procuring of a building was their chief difficulty. Mr Malone : What would the cost of the present room be. The Chairman : The trouble is that the present room would not always be available. His idea of a club was that it wanted to be open every night. Mr Swap : Perhaps we could come to some arrangement with Mr Gordon to let the room at the back of his shop. Mr Gordon said he did not think he could manage that as he was stuck for room now. After some discussion on- this matter Mr Ross said the best thing they could do would be to procure a site and go on with the building. Mr Thomson said he had been tolf i that if they approached Mr Ashor ii I this matter ho would give the timbe i as a donation to the club.
It was moved by Mr Gordon that a committee be appointed to find out at what price the timber could be had. The Chairman : The next business is fixing the membership fee. They would require a little money for material, etc, and he would like to hear suggestions from thoso present as to what they thought would be a fit sum to charge. Mr Scatter : If the fee is made to high many would not join the club. Mr Swap : Make it 10s 6d or a guinea. Mr Wilson moved that a membership fee of 2s 6d be charged, and Gd a week thereafter. ?.'•■ ''!>!• '••■n iiTV"" !V"it t.V»o fee be IU.. Gd. _i_ i\ li.._ii ... iii_i,.wl. The following committee was appointed : Messrs Ross, Gordon, Thomson, Swap, Walker (2), and Robertshow. A vote of thanks to the chairman for presiding terminated the proceedings.
