Wallace Starr-Bowkett Building Society.
A public meeting was held m the Otautau Town Hall, on Thursday evening, to consider the formation of the above society, when the following 40 gentlemen were present, and the utmost unanimity prevailed : — Messrs Joseph Swap, "chairman, W. Saunders, E. Matbeson, J. Sheargold, J. Smith, W. Paterson, H. Dimmock, C. D. Mills, Arch. Macdonald, H. Holt, W. McGarvie, B. Ford, R. Hazlett, M. Coulter, B. Walker, G, Ross, B. Fahey, J. Parmenter, A. H. Officer, John Swap, P. A. Acheson, A. Swhan, F. B. King, T. P. Dyer, G. Thomas, N. Kelly, E. Matheson, jnr., M. Swap, J. Merrie, J. Merrie, jnr., A. Dimmock, T. Steele, J. B. Baird, E. C. Harrington, A. Bulman, M. McAfee, T. Chilton, R. J. Jaquiery, J. Brass, and J. Fisher, seoretary pro tern. Mr Swap, chairman, called npon Mr Fisher to explain the principles of the society and the steps that were necessary to start it. After a very lncid description of what was required, and giving particulars from " The Building Societies Act, 1880," and quoting extracts from the rules of the Invercargill Society, the following resolution was passed : That a Building Society on the Starr-Bowkett principle be formed, limited to' 800 shares ; that the minimum number of shares reqw'ver' to stnrt the society be 500; that; tho libit bs> open for applications up to b.ie iU/th Htptember, immediately &.ftnr v/hicb tbt acting secretary is to oo.'H another meeting. If the minimum number is applied for before that date, the mooting is to be called earlier." Tho following gentlemen were appointor! a- nvovbiional committee, viz, Messr?* Bwan, F. B. King, W. Sam.devp, J. Sheargold, W. Paterson, A. ll . Officer, and T. P. Dyer. The interim secretary was instructed to prepare lists for each of the provisional directors to make a canvas of the town. A meeting of the committee is to be held on Friday, 11th inst, to report progress and make arrangements for holding publio meet-
ings m Nightcaps and elsewhere throughout the district m furtherance of the scheme. Thirty-four of those present took up shares on the spot, totalling 100. An energetic canvass of the town is now being made, aud very ready response met with. The committee expect to be able to place the minimum number of shares fixed upon before the time allowed tbem m the resolution expires.
