MONTHLY MEETSNG RECORD RATE COLLECTION The monthly meeting of *1 ft Egmont County Council was held in the County Chambers on. Tuesday, Mr- W. C. Green, chairman presiding. Present: Crs. R. 11. Baylis, C. R. Stronge, E. E. Chapman, if. Farquhar. R. M. Cathie, 0. Rayed, G. D. Dawson, R. Cassie, the County Engineer, Mr. R. R. Martin, and the County Clerk. Mr. C. Frechtliug. Although the figures were not yet available, rate collections in the Egmont County this year were a record said the County clerk. The collection of European rates in the North and South riding was 100 per cent and in the South riding there was omy one native rate payment outstanding. In the Central riding there were two European payments outstanding hut he, knew that in both cases it was the result of oversight.
The sanitary inspector reported drainage approved and set ml 4. Food premised inspected 4, Catt leva ids 1, Water samples (Waiana River) 4. 1 case of poliomyelitis was also reported. Legal opinion given by the New Zealand Counties Association stated that County Councils were debarred from hiring ditch-digging machinery ro farmers for drainage purposes. Cr- R. H. Baylis advised that Mr. J. S. Stronge, chairman oi the Oaohui-Opuuake Federated Farmers Branch had empowered him to report that experimental ditch in o' on three Oaouni properties had been arranged with a private contractor and it was confidently anticipated that the machine available would do h
satisfactory job at a cost within the means of district farmers. Mr. Strange also expressed appreciation of the County’s cooperation and interest in the large' scale ditching proposals put forward.
Li view of the foregoing, ihe Council decided to take no further action, but the engineer undertook to investigate further the possibility of hiring the contractor’s plant for County drainage work, if satisfactory.
The “ouncil, after a report from the clerk and engineer, decided to enlarge the scope of the replacement fund to mending provision for plant, equipment and building replacements. As a result of a request from Mr. IT. Y. Field for an extension of the road to his TTgariki road property, the council carefully considered the question of making applications for public works road grants, and it was decided to empower the engineer to make such applications for extensions of the Ngarild, Kaliui and Tti roads.
