QUEEN CARNIVAL

RAHOTU’S SUCCESS

TARGET NEARLY DOUBLED Totalling 303,385 votes or just on £3,800 the. Coastal Rugby Queen, Miss Dawn Conic, claimed a splendid win in the Taranaki Rugby Union’s Queen Carnival which ended last Saturday night. Exceeding the runner-up, Miss Beryl Morton of Eltham by 58,985 votes, the Coastal effort was undoubtedly a splendid one and Rahotu’s contribution, for such a small community deserves the unstinted praise of all supporters of Rugby in Taranaki. The Rahotu figures of 127,280 votes alone the ''Southern total of 83,600 and was not far short of the Northern figures, 148,400. Miss Velma Hickey, Opunake’s candidate is also credited with a very fine effort and wag second to Miss Carrie in individual votes recorded. The carnival realized a total of £9747—almost double the target figure of £SOOO and all committees are to be heartily congratulated on the splendid results which surpassed even the most optimistic expectations, and clubs will benefit substantially. BAZAAR AND FAIR

WELL SUPPORTED The final bazaar and fair held in the Drill Hall on Thursday and Friday drew excellent support, especially,on Friday evening’, and a substantial sum was raised. The stalls were well stocked with produce and saleable goods, all donated by District businessmen and residents. Games and Competitions were also popular. Mr. J. S. Hickey, chairman of the Management Committee of the Taranaki Rugby Union announced the winner of the District Carnivals on Friday evening. He heartily congratulated the Rahotu and Opunake Committees on their fine achievements. The smallest Rugby club in the province, Rahotu, had made a magnificent effort he said.

BASKET DANCE

GOOD ATTENDANCE Although the weather was not favourable on Saturday evening, a good crowd of dance-lovers attended the Carnival Basket Dance in aid of the Opunako Princess, Miss Y. Hickey. A disappointing- number of baskets were handed in, but otherwise the evening was a complete sue' cess. Fennell’s Orchestra sup plied appreciated dance music and a happy time was spent by all present. Miss Dawn Corric the successful Coastal and Taranaki Queen was present for a short time and friends took tho opportunity to offer hearty personal congratulations on her sue cess Mr. D. Humphries was M.C.
