CENTENNIAL PLANS

RAISING THE FUNDS

MEETING OF RESIDENTS

Fart of the journey towards Die goal set by the centennial orgamsjng committee formed by residents of town and borough has been accomplished with the •ndications of approval over the whole area which it is hoped wdl he actively interested in the scheme, and in the completion of plans and specifications for submission to the authorities. Such a happy augury as the proposal has received. could indicate notli mg other than that the whole objective is to be realised, but there is a busy and a tryin* time lying ahead. ■'■bjch has been the support al jqady accorded the proposals, however, and so promising hav«

been the indications of co-ordin-ated effort on the part, of all borough and county residents, that the. prospect encourages optimistic rather than pessimistic views.

There will be hard work for all who care to associate themselves actively with the movement, but. the more who share the burden, the lighter it will be for each individual.

The opinion held by His Wor *hip the Mayor, Mr. A. J. Brenon, and share/1 by all prominent residents of the district, that the plan is one worthy of the occas •on and of the whole-hearted support of the coastal area, »s reflected in the views of others not v esident in the district directly concerned. It is, indeed, possible that a good deal of encouragement, moral and monetary, will be forthcoming from outside centres.

Since the scheme, however, is of essentially Western Taranaki interest, the drive for funds will be made in this area, but, naturally, support from other sources 'fill he appreciated. It would appear that the proposal is to establish. a fully representative bodv to act as the organising executive, and smaller organisations will superintend the efforts of the various centres. This will he one of the consid - erations for the public meeting which has been summoned by the Mayor for Thursday of next week. March 2, St. Patrick's Hall being the venue. Generally, the whole question of the centennial proposal will be under review, but specifically the pxirpo.se of the meeting is to discuss proposals to raise funds. The present committee will be greatly aided towards its objective if the attendance is a larpy l and representative one, and Opunake residents in particular are requested to make every endeavour to be present.
