Garden Party.— At Pihama tomorrow-, the residence of Mrs. A. Campbell will be the scene of a garden party organised on behalf of the Presbyterian Church by the ladies guild. Attractions for visitors include various frames and competitions, and. stalls will be open for business. Only a fine dav is required to make the function a success.
Trade Announcement. — Of considerable importance 1o all residents is the announcement appearing in today's issue over the name of Hughsqn's Limited, long-established traders, of thidistriet. The firm announces that, in order to provide room for expansion of its hardware and dapery trade, in which there have been considerable increases, the grocery department is to be closed, and that deliveries of groceries will r.ease aa from March 1.
Street Mart for School. — Formed only last week, the welfare association of the Opunake District High School has quickly adopted its duties, and yesterday was. the sponsor of a .street mart in aid of school funds. A satifactory amount was raised from the sale of goods and produce donated by many supporters, and the organisers express thanks to those who assisted. Ladies in charge of the mart were: Mesdames Mann, Maindonald, Humphries, Lain*?, Mathie, Wood. Bailey and Shields.
Hat Trick Secured. — That unusual honour of. securing a hat-trick rewarded the efforts of S.. Cave, medium-fast bowler of the Opunake cricket team in the senior "B competition fixture with Stratford on Saturday. Brought' on at the southern end to spell E. G. Snell in Ike first innings, Cave, bowled a maiden over, and with the last two balls of his second over he dismissed the last two batsmen of the visiting side. In the second innings, he was the bowler from the southern end, and his first ball secured a wicket, thus completing' the triple success.
School Sports.—• Organisation for the Egraont County primary schools sports, to be held at the Domain on Friday next, is iioav complete, and it is anticipated that the day will be as successful as in previous years. Children competing will number 250, representing some 15 schools, in A and B grades, and these will contest events for all a<j;e groups. The usual trophies will be disputed hv the competing schools. Corresponding- largely with the programme adopted in former years, the schedule of events this vear includes several contests for pupils of the secondary department. The snorts nre. to commence with, a marchnast at 10 a.m.. and there will be n further wirnde after the lunch hour.
