Plain and Fancy Dress Ball.
"A brilliant suooesa," waß the term applied to the annual ball of 1910, whioh was promoted by tbe Opunake Ten Dis Club, and held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening last. The interior of the building was completely transformed. It was artistically decorated with bunting and large fern tress, intermingled with a number of Chinese lanterns, and with the stage very prettily decorated, the effect was, to say the least, exceedingly bright, and refleoted great credit upon those responsible for its gay appearance. Many visitors were present from the surrounding district, notwithstanding the inolement weather that prevailed, and the town was, of course, well represented. In functions of this oharaoter Opunake ia now noted for presenting elegantly and quaintly decorated supper tables, laden with every oonceivable delicacy, and on this occasion the effeot was very pleasing. An excellent orchestra of five instruments, and a highly polished floor added greatly to the enjoy ment of those present. The soene at tbe time of commencing proceedings was animated in the extreme; the fanoy oostumes being in moat instances olever and high in oolor, lending enohantment to the view. Many of the dmseß were original and very pretty, whilst some were responsible for creating no end of amusement. Prizes were presented by the Club for competition, to be awarded to lady and gentleman, respectively, appearing in the most popular oostume. Those present were called upon to exeroise their vote aooordingly, a nottoo easy task. After the scrutineers had completed the oount, the President of the Club (Mr Enell). announced the result, and presented the trophies. As "Masherette" Mrß W. Humphries headed the list with 31 voteß, the oharaoter being well sustained and carried out to a nicety, whilst Mr W. Holmes Beoured first honors among the gentlemen, his representation of St. Nicholas being very good. Following is the list of characters:— Mrs Wm. Humphries, "Masherette" (winner). Mrs Enell, " Powder and Patches. Misa Bent, "Red Cross Nurse.'^ Misa Cassidy, " Day and Night. Miss Olarke, " Winter." Miss Feaver, " Beoky Sharp." Miss N. Holmes, " Motorist." Coombridge, " Indian Prinoe." Mr L, Des Forges, "Piet." Mr R. Feaver. " Bedouin." Mr Francis," Clown," Mr Higham, " Page." Mr Enell, " Old Black Joe." A trophy, presented to the Club early in the season for a ladies' handicap singles competition, was won by Mrs Hamilton. This was also presented amidst much applause. The presentations consisted of a gold dagger brooch, rose bowl, and a pair of gold sleeve links. We take this ocoasion of heartily congratulating the members of the Club on the very complete way in which the arrangements were so successfully carried out. Everything went smoothly and without a hitch from beginning to end. The Ball will be long remembered as being one of tbe very jolliest yet held in Opunake.
