To Populate Australia.
GENERAL BOOTH'S SCHEME. London, September 15. The newspapers believe, that General Booth's offer to Mr Deakin relates largely to people from the country who have drifted into the towns. It is understood that the offer is due to the Australian summer corresponding with the period of distress in Eugland. Melbourne, Sept. 15. Mr Deakin, referring to General Booth's proposal, stated that he had a conversation, when he was a private member, with General Booth, when the latter indicated what his intentions were. He hoped to obtain blocks of Crown lands, either as grants or for ordinary payment, and to provide himself with sufficient capital to make the settlements a success. «
The scheme provides for co-opera-tion among the settlers, and advantage would be taken of any advances to settlers, or legislation of that character, existing in tbe State in which they took up their quarters. He desired the Federal Government to help in the charter of transports such as ho had despatched to Canada. At no time had General Booth suggested any alteration of the Immigration Restrictions Act. Mr Watson thinks the scheme is entitled to the sympathetic consideration of the State 3.
