AN EXPLANATION.
[to the editoe.] Sib, —Would yon kindly permit me to offer an explanation of the question asked at Mrs H. Lee's meeting on Thursday last, as it seems, to say the least, rather ambiguous. Mrs Lee seemed to think, that under no-licence, poverty would almost disappear, and yet, according to her own showing, it is the landlord who benefits at the expense of the rest of the community in no-license districts. lam in favor of no-license, not because I think it will increase wages, but because it will tend toward the moral welfare of the district. My question in effect was: That seeing that the Polish, Russian, and German Jews in a large London area were the most abstemious, how did she account for their poverty ? The answer I got was : Re Edison, &c.: " What a war of giants if we were." In conclusion I would say : That I do not believe that drink is the cause of poverty to the extent it is made out to be, but rather vice versa. Thanking you in anticipation, I am, &c, T. Tanneb.
