A Serious Riot.

Melbourne, July 20. A riot on an extensive scale occurred at Brunswick yesterday, arising indirectly out of the twelfth of July celebration in the early part of the week. An Orange procession was prohibited, and a good deal of ill-feelmg aroused. A number of Orangemen proceeded in small parties to a meeting place. An advertisement was inserted in Saturday’s newspapers convening a meeting of Irishmen on a vacant section ou the line of route along which the Orangemen would pass. This was called ostensibly to discuss the Irish question, but, scenting a row, the public to the number of 20,000 turned up, and a riot commenced with the approach of a drag containing a number of Orangemen who were mobbed and their colors torn from their breasts.

As the different parties came along they were violently attacked with stones, knocked down, and severely maltreated. Free fights in the crowd became general, and for three hours the battle raged. Many were injured by showers of stones, but not seriously. One woman had a narrow escape and was only saved by a number of men forming a circle and beating off the mob.
