Escaped Prisoners.
Two of the escaped prisoners, Alley and Lukusohuski, were arrested a mile out of Eltham on Tuesday morning by a party of six men belonging to a survey party. ,r
The prisoners were observed crossing a paddock and chase was immediately given. They were surrounded, after a smart chase, in a gully. They begged for their liberty, but their captors were inexorable.
They were taken into Eltham and given into the custody-of Constable Simpson. On Tuesday evening about seven o’clock two youths named Locker and Irwin saw Johnstone alias Aikman cross the main road in the north of the Borough of Patea, and, being mounted and unarmed, kept him in view until he left the road and took a track towards the river.
The youths then procured a carbine and revolver and gave chase, but lost sight of the man in a thickly planted reserve. So they made all speed to the bridge and stationed themselves on the other end, and were shortly rewarded by seeing him walking on to the bridge. When nearly at the end they faced him, covering him with the carbine and ordered him to put up his hands, which he did at once, and was arrested unresistingly. He was taken to the lock-up where he now is.
The prisoners Alley and Lukuschuski were brought before the Court, the former receiving 12 months and the latter 6 months further imprisonment.
