Burns’ centenary is to be celebrated at Manaia on Tuesday evening by a concert and dance.
A large number of settlers attended the funeral of Mrs Bremner, which took place on Tuesday, thus testifying their respect for deceased.
The parishoners’ annual meeting in connection with St. Barnabas’ Church Opunake, will be held on Tuesday July 28th, in the schoolroom.
We have to acknowledge receipt of the report of the Fruitgrowers Conference from the Agricultural Department, which contains very interesting information to . orchadists and others.
The Rev. J. W. Chapman, who is leaving this district to take charge of Johusonville, close to Wellington, was presented by his parishoners at Manaia with a purse of sovereigns at the annual church meeting. Deep regret at his departure was expressed by those present. A farewell social to him will be held in the Foresters’ Hall, Opunake, on Monday evening.
“ Observer ” and “ Pro Bono Publico ” complain of the method in which surface work is being done in the Parihaka Riding, and think work should be more evenly distributed amongst resident workmen. They also complain of delay in carrying out the work. Wc would suggest their interviewing the foreman for an explanation of their grievances.
The Agent-General is being complimented on all sides on his brilliant address on New Zealand. The London papers noticed it in highly favorable terms. One of them remarked that “ Mr Reeves’ address was not a mere cut and dried essay, but was a poetic oration—a piece of masterly word-paiuting.” Another says it was “ one of the most brilliant efforts of the season.”
The hollow result of the Manawatu-Wan-ganui footbHll match is bewailed by the Palmerston Standard in this fashion:—One shudders to think what the result would have been had the Taranaki match been played. The team would have been annihilated. The Union should certainly put a stop to representative matches until something worthy of the name can be got together.
At the Wanganui Education Board meeting it was decided that—Ester Wallace be transferred from Mangatoki ; F. Gabites be appointed a cadet at Kaponga ; Clara Crowhurst to be fourth-class pupil teacher at Manama ; Una Powell to be transferred from Aramoho to Kapuni; John Love, of Timaru, to be appointed teacher at Rutanui, The following tenders were dealt with :—Hawera residence, fresh tenders to be called and referred to executive ; Pihama, fresh tenders to be invited and referred to the executive. It was resolved to grant drawing models to Pihama.—Chronicle.
The Rev Mr Griffin, speaking on a recent Sunday night in the Methodist Church on the subject of “ Morality in Pahiatua,” indulged in some very straight hitting. Among his hardest hits were the following ; “ Pahiatua is often spoken of as the home of the gods. In his opinion it was the home of all the evil gods it was possible to cram into so small a space.” “In his opinion Pahiatua should be associated with Sodom and (-roraorrah.” ‘‘lf .60 righteous men were rerequired to save Pahiatua from destruction in his opinion they could not be found. In fact he would not be prepared to say ten could be found in the time,” Ten is a big order for a small town.
