Stolen Jewellery Recovered.
A rather exciting capture of a thief took place on Thursday in Eltbam, Constables. Simpson and Ryan effecting the arrest. Our readers will remember a case of jewellery having been stolen from the railway station some twelve months ago, the affair being a most mysterious one, no trace ever having been discovered of the bos. A man named Richard White, who has had records against him, has been rather lavish iu making presents of jewellery, mostly rings, to some of his lady friends. The matter, reaching the ears of Constable Simpson, created a suspicion in his mind as to the ownership of the jewellery, and putting two and two together, he came to the conclusion that they must be some of the lost articles. Knowing the desperate character of White, Constable Simpson very wisely enlisted the services of Constable Ryan, of Inglewood, who came down by the 11 train. The constable, knowing the usual haunts of his man, soon found him in Mr Ogden’s Hotel, where they arrested him. Constable Simpson left the prisoner in charge of Constable Ryan and went away to get a vehicle to convey him to Stratford. On his return he found that the prisouer had overcome the constable after a severe struggle, and wont to his assistance, but White managed to elude them and beat a retreat down the railway line, the constables following him. The prisoner then made for some bush, where he hid, the efforts of his wouldbe captors not succeeding in driving him ont. The constables finding that it was useless to try and find the man in the bush went back to his whare, expecting his return. In this they were not mistaken, as during the afternoon White came back to obtain something, but that something proved to be a pair of handcuffs. Prisoner was taken down to Hawera by the evening train, and on to New Plymouth on Friday.—Post.
