Public Picnic.

The above picnic, organised by a committee of ladies and gentlemen, took place on Wednesday, and was a decided success, there being about 150 people present. The weather in the morning was somewhat hazy, but before midday all appearance of bad weather disappeared, and the day turned out beautifully fine for picnicing. About 11 o’clock crowds of people left the town in brakes provided by Mr J. Clare, as well as those in private conveyances and on horseback, and proceeded to a splendid rendezvous on Mr Cross’ property, on the Waiteika Road, which was kindly lent for the occasion. The place was well suited for a picnic, there being everything required close at hand, besides which the drive was an outing for most people in itself. An abundance of provisions had been supplied, and the cloth being laid about 12.80 dinner was, partaken of, and the appetites of the hungry soon appeased. Swings for the children, aud various other amusements were provided; whilst a number of young people sought pleasure in gathering ferns in the bush, of which there is a large variety. Tea was laid about five o’clock and done full justice to, after which the brakes left for home and every one returned well pleased with the pleasant day’s outing. Mrs Ballard, the secretary, and members of the committee, assisted by a number of willing hands, were indefatigable in attending to the wants of the visitors. As a finale to the day’s amusement a dance was held in the Town Hall, and about 25 couples tripped the light fantastic toe till a little after midnight. The music was played by various persons in the hall aud the refreshments were contributed by a few ladies.
