RESCUE OF A CREW. Sydney, November 30. The ship Aristides has arrived from London, bringing the captain and 13 of the crew and two passengers of the French barq-.c Terre Neuvre. The Aristides en o tv red a stiff gale in the latitude of the Island of St. Paul, and shortly afterwards sighted a barque flying signals of distress. She was in a sinking condition. A boat was lowered to render assistance, but in the face of the mountainous sea running, the work of rescue was attended by the utmost difficulty, yet the crew of the Aristides managed to get all those off the derelict with safety. The Terre Neuvre had been out 100 days from Hamburg to Adelaide, and had terrible weather throughout. She had been beating about for several days dismasted and disabled. The vessel was continuously swept by the waves, and all the boats were smashed. There were ten feet of water in the hold ; consequently the crew were unable to get below to obtain food, and were almost starved. The crew lost everj thing. The vessel had a general cargo. London, November 30. Jabez Balfour has been convicted on a charge of dividing with Wright, contractor, £20,000 commission on the construction of Whitehall Court, and was sentenced to 14 years’ hard labor. Sir P. Currie, British Ambassador at Constantinople ordered H.M.S. Dryad through the Straits. The Sultan took alarm at this action, and at midnight sent Said and Tewfik Pashas to beg for delay. The Ashantee King Prempes still maintains a defiant attitude. The princes friendly disposed towards the British have provided 10,000 carriers to assist British forces in proceeding against the king. It is expected that the British Budget will show a surplus of six millions. Great Britain undertakes the construction of a railway of 260 miles, from Mandalay to Kunlon, in order to prevent the French monopoly of Yunnan. Messrs Weddel, the well-known frozen meat dealers, were banquetted by the merchants of Manchester to celebrate the arrival of the Timaru with cargo for that town. The Chairman of the Ship Canal presided, and said he hoped the trade would grow to huge proportions. Mr Weddel said the export of mutton from Australia would shortly overshadow the New Zealand trade, and declared that they would fight the Argentine growers, and expressed the belief that the marking of imported meat would prove benefit to the colonies. ' New York, November 30. The Nicaragua Canal Commission estimate the construction of the canal at 134,000,000 dollars, and advise further enquiry. St. Petersburg, November 80. Severe storms have been experienced in the Southern part of Russia, and many ports on the Black Sea submerged. Several coasters have been sunk, and it is estimated the damage on laud is 40,000,000 roubles. Eighty lives were lost. • Hobart, November 30. Kaye, lessee of Trefoil Island, with Jiis wife, son and daughter, started from the mainland about six weeks ago, but when a little distance from the Island the boat was swamped and all drowned in presence of the children on the Island. The fact was only discovered by men calling at the Island yesterday. A fourteen-year-old daughter had looked after the young brothers and sisters. All provisions were exhausted, but the boy killed a sheep, on which they were living when found.
