RAHOTU.

(Our own Correspondent.)

On Saturday, 31st August, the last act in connection with the rifle competition for Mr McGuire's " Egmont " cup was played. Mr S. Sefton is now the fiual owner of the cup, having won it twice in succession. I must say, however, that one of the members has experienced extremely "hard luck" lately, and that is Mr W. C. Phillips. He has fired from scratch, and at each of the last three matches has finished second to men who had a long start in the way of handicaps. Scores as under:

Mr Knott, the lecturer, again gave his exhibition of magic lantern pictures, &c, in the hall, on Thursday evening. There was a fair attendance. He also repeated (by special request) his lecture, " Ten nights in a bar-room," which, having been noticed so often and favorably before, needs no further comment.

One of the chief topics of conversation lately has been the football match, Auckland v. Taranaki. It was generally considered that it would be a hard game, but that Taranaki would come out on top ; so that the result carno as a surprise to a good many. I notice another residence is being built in our little township. The timber is on the ground for two more, and.we have had another settler arrive here with hia family during the week. Would the gentle (Rahotu) reader consider your humble " own " a giddy senseless thing were he tj suggest that it is nearly time- we possessed a Town Board, or some other " board " of city fathers, to provide bettor roading for pedestrians. It requires very skilful navigation to get about after tain without coming to grief in a mud hole or a ditch or other equally unpleasant obstruction. —Sept. 6th. MrMcCullum resumed his coaching service between Rahotu and New Plymouth on Saturday. The Quadrille Assembly held a very successful dunce in the hall on Wednesday evening. The attendance at these gatherings has greatly improved lately, probably on account of the more favorable weather experienced. September 9th,
