In the bowling match between the New Zealand and Balmaiu teams, the former were 101 to 86. Mr E. Tennyson Smith, since his recent return to England from New Zealand, has been airing his views on the teetotal legislation in this colony. "In iive. years all Mew Zealand will, I believe, be under prohibition," said Mr Tennyson Smith, witli enthusiasm. " People in England do not realise the great work that is going on there. The history of New Zealand show;; that men must be taught to use the "opportunities they have for reform. lie attributed the recent temperance legislation in New Zealand to the women's vote. He that if Imperial Federation does not come in this generation, colonial sernualion will come in the next. He warns parents that to send their sons to the colony to ' reform ; is ' to give them an express ticket to perdition, as the temptations to go wrong are much greater in the colony and the restraints are much lesß than at Home." It seems strange that Mr Smith, whilst asserting that " Prohibition would exist in New Zealand in five years' time," should immediately afterwards warn parents against sending their sons to the colony as it was '• giving them an express tioket to perdition."
