The Half-Holiday.
Wellington, March 5. A deputation from Greytown North, headed by the Mayor, waited upon the Minister for Justice, urging that the half-holiday be changed from Saturday to Thursday. Mr Reeves, in reply, said tbat while sympathising with the request, the Wairarapa Magistrate, in a test case, bad decided that the gazetted notices were conclusive. The evidence was that Saturday was the legal day, and this being so he was bound to respect that decision. If the petitioners considered the Magistrate's decision erroneous the -Courts were open to them to test the question. Out of 77 cities and towns which have selected their weekly half-holiday 40 have chosen Wednesday, 26 Thursday, 7 Saturday, and 2 each Tuesday and Friday. The full list is as follows: Tuesday: Foxton and Papakura. Wednesday: Arrowtown, Brunnerton, Bulls, Cambridge, Campbelltown, Clinton, Cromwell, Dunedin, Feilding, Greymouth, Hamilton, Hampden, Hokitika, Invercargill, Lawrence, Mar ton, Mat aura, Napier, Nelson, Ormondville, Otautau, Pahiatua, Palmerston North, Palmerston South, Petona, Picton, Queenstown, Richmond, Riverton, Ross, Rotorua, Southbridge, Taradale, Tologo Bay, Waipawa, Waitahuna, Wellington, Woodville, Wyudhatn. Thursday: Ashburton, Balclutha, Carterton, Christchurch, Coromandel, Featherstm, Geraldine, Inglewood, Kaiapoi, Lyttelton, Mosgiel, Naseby, New Plymouth, Oamarn, Rangiora, Stratford, Tauranga, Te Aroha, Te Awamutu, Temuka, Thames, Timaru, Waimate, Wanganui, Westport, and Whangarei. Friday : Hawera and Patea. Saturday: Amberley, Auckland, Gisborne, Greytown North, Onehunga, Outram and Waverley.
