The resolution striking a special r-i'.e of l£d in the pound in connection with the Conway Road loan was confirmed. ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting was then held, TENDERS. The action of the members in opening tenders on Friday owing to absence of a quorum was confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. . From Thomas Geary, asking for removal of six gates on Ohanga Road, which were an inconvenience to settlers.'-Or Quin said there were deviations on the load. The foreman stated that there were some deviations, which Lad not been legalised. The gates were on the deviations. Resolved, • That the request be attended to when the deviations are legalised. Martin ■ Olsen, asking for use of
pound paddock at Eltham.—Cr Quin was empowered to act according to his judgment. F. H. -Simons, Te Roti, forwarding petition from settlers asking for work to be done on Dalziel Road.—The clerk said -there were no funds flti hand, but that £l2 had been overdrawn. Resolved, That the clerk write that no funds are in hand. G. T. Perrott, applying for leave lo slaughter cattle on Section 20, Block 10, Kaupokonui. Granted. Joseph "Wilson, asking that property at Ketemarae be re-assessed on the ground that the house had been burned down. Acceded to, G. O. Tothill, Invercargill, forwarding letter about cutting Californian thistles, and asking for co-operation of the Council. The letter suggested that settlers and County Councils should take steps to remove the thistles before seeding.—Letter to be acknowledged, and Mr Tothill to be informed that the pest does not exist in this district. Department of Land and Survey, notifying that Te Ngutu-o-te-Mauu Reserve had been placed under provisions of Domains Act, and that the Chairman of the Council, Messrs G. F. Robinson, H. Cook, G. H. Maunder, "W. L. Luscombe were appointed members of the Board. M. Mouldy, reminding Council of promise to repair Opunake-Stratford Road between Punehu River and Eltham. All available funds to be spent forthwith. Stratford County Council, asking Council to contribute half cost of material for a foot bridge over the Mang iwhero-iti. Resolved, That the Council be informed that bridge is not in Hawera County, but if it would beuefit • settlers ou west side the Council may entertain request ou estimate of cost being forwarded. Taranaki County Council, forwarding resolution of Council that Taungatara bridge be v» sted in Hawera County Council, and stating that it would pay £IOO towards cost of erection of new bridge when funds were available.—The foreman said the bridge wou’d cost £BOO. Cr Quin moved tbe Council be informed that - they are liable to pay half cost, and that unless these terms be agreed to steps be taken to apply for a commission to determine the matter, —Carried. J. R. Stewart, forwarding apology for non-attendance at meeting. R. E. Mcßae, applying for slaughter license on Section 26, Block IV, Wai- . mate.—Granted, provided no objection by settlers. A. O’Sullivan, G. H. Maunder, and others, asking that any money accruing from land revenue within Hastings Road special loan area may be expended within the same—Cr Winks moved that tbe petition be-considered when the Council has power. Carried.
R. Dawbin, accepting terms of Council for erecting footbridge over the Mangawbero. G. Tindle, offering to prepare electoral rolls for proposed Okaiawa and Mangatoki Ridings for £1 Is each. Accepted R. 0. Hendy, asking for cutting to be put through hill on Anderson Road. Left in Foreman’s hand to report. A. McKeown, asking for surveyor to place corner pegs in Pihama Cemetery. Left in hands of Chairman. Crown Lands, New Plymouth, enclosing forms to be filled up, giving information in connection with rents of lands in the district with the Fair Rent Bill. —Ordered to lie on the table. ROAD XU BEACH. A deputation consisting of Messrs W. McFarland, R. H. Nolan, W. Lucena, H. Spratt, and A. Milne waited on the Council. Mr Me Farland said they wanted the Council to metal portion of the road from the Main South Road down to Mr Milne’s about J mile. It had been spoilt in the public service and the settlers thought it should be done. ‘The road was ruined by the traction engine. It was easy to repair and it was close to the crusher. In answer to the Chairman The foreman said if it was only 60 chains the cost would be under £3OO ; say 5s yard. Mr Milne said some of them had been paying rates for the last 20 years and the road was almost impassable last winter. About 10 or 11 persons were served by the road. He thought it would be beneficial to the Council as it would be used for carting gravel for some time to come. Cr Winks said it would take all the rates of the district. If graded and formed it would suffice. Mr Nolan said this would do for the
sett'er*, b:l not if the engine went over it. As a commercial transaction it uninil be a great saving for the Cou nil to do if, as the engine could then w rk in all weather. 'ih.' tureman said stoue would be there for the next 20 years. The Chairman said they would consider the £. s. cl. The Council is of opinion that something should be done before whaler. Tbe deputation thanked the Council and withdrew. AUSTIN ROAD. Messrs A. Bissett and Ross waited on the Council. Mr Bissett said they wanted something done to repair the cutting crossing the Tawhiti, near Mr Casey’s Last year it was not fit for traffic of any description, and they were unable to send their children to school. They would also ask the Council to consider the advisability of opening the Austin road. He presented a memorial signed by several settlers. Mr Ross endorsed Mr Bissett’s remarks. Cr Quin said that to open Austin Road from the Old Mountain Road to the New Mountain road would be an impossibility in the slate of their finances. As to the Austin road to Ketemarae, he understool that it was to be graded. Cr Winks moved, That four or five chains of metaling be clone at Casey’s and that the old Waihi Road from Casey’s to the Austin Road be graded. Seconded by Cr Quin and carried. THE GRADER. Cr Winks would like to know how the grader was being used. He wanted for throe years to get the Ohangai Road dona, but could not. The Turuturu Road had been done and he would like to know by whall authority. The Foreman said the Turuturu Road was authorised to be done. Cr Winks thought the Ohangai was most needed, and it was passed that it should be done. OHANGAI ROAD. %lessrs Davidson and Buchanan waited on the Council to ask that something should be clone to theOhanghai Road, from the pah to the Tangahoe River. It wanted about twelve chains of metal, which could be got close by. The floor of the bridge was also rotten. Cr Winks moved, That the foreman prepare specifications and call tenders (to be opened in fourteen days) for 16 chains of metalling, that grading be done as soon as the grader is available, and that repairs be done to the bridge ; Crs McLean and Scott to open tenders. Seconded by Cr McLean, and carried. REPAIRS WANTED. At Cr Scott’s suggestion repairs are to be made to the main South Road near Mr Baiid’s. AUROA ROAD. A letter was read from G. A, Hurley re Opanake, Stratford and Auroa Read, asking Council to do a strip of road about six or seven chains, treating it as Opunake Road. The Chairman would like to see it done, but there were unfortunately no funds. He moved that Mr Hurley be advised that there are no funds at present, but that there may be before winter time. Seconder by Cr Scott, and carried. MANAIA ROAD. Cr Scott said Mr Christie had asked him to urge for some expenditure on Manaia Road. It was decided to inform Mr Christie that there were no funds available.—Star.
