Fire.

Mr Powell, a settler on the Kiri Road, had the misfortune to have his house burned on Wednesday afternoon. After dinner, when he left the premises, there vjas only a very small fire left in the fireplace, which was considered safe, but on returning about 5 o’clock he saw his place in flames. There were four pounds of blasting powder, a flask of powder, and a quantity of cartridges in the building, and just as he was within a few chains of the place the powder exploded, blowing the roof off the house. Mr Powell is a heavy loser, as all his clothing, and effects, including two double-barrelled guns, were completely destroyed.
