"Hr Newton King’s Weekly Report, New Plymouth, December 14. Cattle.—l have so often endeavored to impress settlers with the necessity of forwarding entries that it seems futile for me to make any further remarks upon the subject. It must, however, be patent to anyone that buyers especially from a distance, will not always attend a sale upon the mere speculation of being able to satisfy their requirements but like to have a more definite prospect. At Stratford, on Tuesday, the yards were crowded, not a third of the number being entered. Bidding was alow from the start and the sale' the quietest J have had for some time, most of the pens being passed in and though a large number were placed after the sale vendors in a great many cases preferred to drive home rather than accept the reduced prices. I quote: Calves, 25s to 28s ; yearlings, 81s 6d to 89s : 18-month atqers £2 8s 6d.to £2 12s; 2-year steers, £2 15s to £3; 2 to 8-year do, £3 10s; 18-month heifers, £2 14s to £2 16s; springers, £3 17s to £4 10s; store cows, £2 10s to £3 ; fresh do, £8 fat do, £4 to £5 IBs (the latter being of unusual quality); springers, £8 10s to £5 2s 6d. At Waiwakaiho, on Thursday, there was a comparatively small muster; there was however little demand and prices were a good deal lower than for some time past. Calves made 17s to 255; yearlings, 28s 6d to 365; 16month do, 39s 6d; 2-year do, £2l6s; 18-month to 2-year heifers, £2 18s to £3 2s; springers £3 15s to £4 7s; store cows, 35s to £3; springing do, £3 10s to £4 ; cows and calves, £8 11s; fat bullocks £slss; shorn ewes, 7s 9d.
