Railway Collision.

Strathfield (N.S.W.) Oct. 81. A collision occurred between two trains 10-day. The Goulbmn train was leaving the platform when it encountered the Paramatta train, which was being run as an express from Ashfield. The trains met just under the signal box outside the Redfern station, and but for the fact that the Goulburn train bad little way on, and the suburban train was slackening up, there would have been an appalling loss of life.

Almost tbe whole of the damage occurred to tbe suburban train, tire engine of which was much lighter than the Goulburn locomotive. The impact caused the suburban carriages to telescope, the first car running into the engine, the steam from which terribly scalded most of tbe occupants of the next car, and blocked the means of exit from the leading car, the passengers in which had to be dragged through the windows. The most serious cases are those of Jones (fireman), David Jones, and Dean Macartby. The latter was fearfully scalded about the throat, and it is quite possible tracheotomy will be necessary. There are but little hopes entertained of the reverend gentleman’s recovery. Mr Bulmer, a barrister, was also badly scalded, and lies in a critical condition.

Pearce, the driver of one of tbe engines, was badly injured, and the other fireman was killed. Others who received minor injuries are : Miss Horton, Mesdamcs Davis and Hart, Messrs Pyman, Fallack, Johnston, Guerson (2), Biskett, Brierly, Hart, Osborne, Grainger, Beaumont, McKenzie, Gillieu, Guodliog, Ralston, Haslett, Banks, Wilson, Berry, Raine, and Sommerville. The cause of the accident is not exactly known, but it is believed the Goulburn train drew out without the signals against it. None of the passengers of tbe latter train sustained auy injury. The occupants cooped in the first carriage of the suburban train had a terribly thrilling time, and owing to tbe bars in tbe windows, were unable to effect their escape until assisted from outside.
