Commercial.

* Messrs Nolan, Tonks and Co. s

Stock Report. Hawera, October 18. At Opunake on IGth inst., we had a good muster of cattle, most of which were disposed of at or after the auction. Our usual sale was held at Manaia on 17th inst. There was a large entry, and fair competition, most lines being sold before leaving the yards. Section 88, Block 10, Kaupokonui, was offered, but not realising vendor’s upset it was withdrawn, and is now open for private sale.

We quote—At Opunake—Calves, 16s to 21s ; yearlings, £2 to £2 5s ; 2 to steers, £3 to £3 6s ; 2 ; year heifers, £2 11s to £2 15s ; springers, £4 5s to £4 15s ; store cows, £2l7s to £3 6s ; cows and calves, £8 10s ; fat cows, £4.

Mr Newton King’s Weekly Report. New Plymouth, October 18. Owing to the prolonged spell of dry weather following on the cold and backward spring, feed everywhere is

very short, and cattle-buyers generally are* hesitating to purchase with-.the freedom usual at this season of the year. . At Strafford, on Tuesday, the yards were very full, hut for the foregoing reasons demand was not brisk, and several pens were passed in. Nearly everything was, however, subsequently sold at prices slightly below late rates. A few pens of big steers met with fair enquiry, and were nearly all sold at the l amnv r. There were fewir dairy cattle than usual yarded. Hie majority of wji'ch were only medium quality, though one pen of good milkers a tribe backward made high prices. Calves made 20s Gd to 355; yearlings, 38s to 47s Od ; 12 to 18month steers, £2 11s 6d to £2 17s ; 2 to 24 do., £3 3s to £3 11s; 3-year do., £3 18s ; 18-month heifers, £2 15s ; 2-year do., £8 ; springers, £4 5s to £5 16s ; store cows, £1 17s to £3 ; fresh condition do., £8 8s to £4; springing do , £4 5s to £7. At Waiwakaiho, on Thursday, the yards were filled, and the sheep-pens had to be taken for young cattle. The prices were very steady, and nearly every pen sold at the hammer, but at rates 2s to 5s below last sale, which, however, it must be remembered, was a particularly hot one. Dairy cattle were easier, the strong demand for early springers, being now over. There were several nice lots of stock in from the Mimi district and Tikorangi bush district. Calves, small, 17s Gd to 25s ; 42s ; yearlings, £2 8s 6J ; 2-year steers, £3 7s 6.1 to £3 16s Id ; 18-raon(h .to 2-year heifers, £2 15s to £3 7s 6d; springing cows, to £6 10s ; store cows, £3 5s ; empty heifers, £3 to £8 Bs; 2i to 3-year steers, £4 2s Gd.
