MANAIA.

(Oub Own Correspondent.)

Mr M. Stevenson, of Manaia, wrs successful in his protest against The Squab in the Stratford Trotting, and thus gets first prize, £ls, and in all probability the Club will have to pay him £SO for the totalisator money, he, I believe, having the only ticket on his own horse. The Squab, I understand, bad not been nominated. Mr Hurley, who has for the past 10 years managed the cemetery business, is about to hand the control over to the Town Board. Seeing that the lowest that one could be got to do this for'is £5 a year, tbe secretary eventually has thus saved at least £SO, and when the Board takes it over the least they can do is to leave Mr Hurley in possession, with an annual salary. All the graves in the top (used) part have been numbered and identified with brass labels. The register will be completely in order, as all the accounts have been audited and certified as correct by Mr Benporatb. Cricket will soon be " en evidence." Cannot Opunake muster an eleven and challenge us. One of the funniest sights in Manaia now is H. E. Good on a low bicycle. The Manaia Town Board hold a special meeting on the 24th to strike a town rate of £d and a country rate of £d and prepare estimate of proposed expenditure; also to receive deputation from the Cycle Club, to discuss proposed request for assistance towards track.
