AWATUNA.
' (Our Own Correspondent.) Merging matters appear to be exciting the minds of the people round here, and an uncompromising war of opinion is being waged between the people and their representative on the Council. The settlers here are determined to force the position, and Cr Hemming way is determined to defend it. Which party wins will be proved at the Council meeting on Friday. Two petitions are being circulated in this district, one signablc by those who state they had been misled into signing the original petition, and the other containing the names of those objecting to merging with Hawera. Messrs Watson, Proudlock, Maloney, Perrot and Henson are looking after these petitions, and I am informed they are being numerously signed at this end of the district, but that people further up the Eltham Eoad decline to, have anything to do with them. The bachelors of Awatuna held a dance in the Awatuna Hall on Friday. The hall was.tastefully decorated for the occasion. with ferns and nikau palms, and considerable , time was spent on getting, the floor hi order. The night was beautifully fine, and as the roads are in such good condition now a large.attendance was ex* pected. The number who attended, however, was more than, equal to ex-.-,,, pectations, people arriving from *all > directions. The bachelors, are to be congratulated 6*n such a success. We had a visit from Prof. Lio Metlo recently. He had a very good and eminently appreciative audience. He is too well known already as a clever elocutionist and first-rate phrenologist to need any farther comment from me. , , * I have nothing new to chronicle about the burglar. I hear Constable Twomey is on his track. . Oct 17.
