The first practice of the Opuuake Cricket Club was held on Saturday last, when a fair muster of players turned up. The pitch was in fair brder, and with attention will get into good order by the time the season is a bit on. There were a number of new players on the ground some of whom are promising, whilst the veterans seemed to have lost none of their skill.
The depravity engendered by, football was apparent in the attempt shown by some of the fielders to manipulate the ’ ball with thfiir feet instead of their hands.
On Saturday next en opening match between married and single is to take place, when we expect to see a good muster and an exciting match.
■New Plymouth is expected, to play the return match for the past season the 9th November, so that our men will need to put in all the practice they can before then.
Wednesday and Saturdays have been fixed on as practice days, and country members coming in may be sure of a game as there are enough town members on the spot to make practices interesting. In addition to the bat presented by the president for the best batting average, Mr W. W. Middleton, who is one of the vice-presidents, has kindly offered a bat, for the bsst bowljjig average, so that both departments will have an incentive to put up a record.
