Tolls in Taranaki County.

At the County Council meeting on Monday, Mr Tate introduced his mo; tion, notice of which had been given at the previous meeting, that in future tolls be collected by day labor in preference to letting the gates by tender. In speaking to the motion, Mr Tate said if his proposal was adopted the Council would effect a saving. There were eight or nine gates in the district, and even if only £lO were saved it was something. He believed that a good profit was derived by those who had the gates by tender, and he thought the system should be given a trial, if only for twelve months. Mr Okey seconded the motion, as he believed it was a step in the right direction. The Chairman asked what wages would be given. Mr Tate replied that was a question for future consideration. Mr Horrocks agreed that a trial should ( be given to the proposal, but he regretted that no details of the scheme had been submitted. Until some scheme was made he did not feel inclined to vote for tbe motion. Mr Connett differed from Mr Horracks. If the Council affirmed the principal of the proposal any other difficulties could be overcome. He would support the motion. Mr McCullum was afraid that if they had day labor there would be too many/doors open for exemption. Mr McGloin did not agree with employing day labor in macfcers of this kind. If it was possible to find honest men he would not be averse to the proposal. Mr Adlam said if a man was employed at four shillings a day and he thought he was worth sis, that man would himself take the balance. He had dealt with rogues and honest men, and always treated men as rogues until be found they were honest. He would not support the proposition. Mr Horrocks moved as an amendment—" That the gates be leased from now until 31st March, 1895." . Mr Adlam seconded.

The amendment was put and carried on the voices bv sto 8. It was then put as the substantive motion, and carried.—News.
