ELTHAM ROAD.
(Our Own Correspondent.)
The opening of the newly-built hall at Awatuna came off on Friday night (under very unfavourable conditions as regards the weather) in the shape of a concert and dance ; at least, the dance came off all right, but owing to the committee depending mainly on outside talent for the concert (and those not putting in an appearance), an impromptu programme, consisting of about a dozen songs pnd recitations, had to suffice; and, though short, everybody seemed well pleased, as most of the songs were capitally sung, and the recitations were, with one exception, well rendered. The best was undoubtedly Mr Fisher’s song, “ I’ll Take You Home Aagain, Kathleen.” This was loudly encored, but not responded to. Mr Fix gave several comic songs, which highly amused the audience. Mr Gardner, from Eltham, gave several good recitations in firstclass style. Mr Hemingway recited “ The Trial ” scene from “ Pickwick,” and Mr Burgess also gave a recitation, “ How the Old Horse Won the Bet,” both of which were well rendered. The hall was neatly decorated with nikau, fern, flags, and Chinese lanterns, and looked very pretty. The audience fairly filled the building, which is not large, and had the night been fine, I am afraid some of us would have had to seek accommodation outside. After the concert, refreshments were handed round, and as this department was under the care of Mesdames Parker and Thomas, it will be understood that the viands were both varied and delicate in quality and unlimited in quantity. The weather was to be blamed for the very meagre number of ladies (about 20) present, aud those had unlimited dancing during the night. Dancing commenced about 11, and was kept up till daylight, varied occasionally with a funny song from Mr Fix, and several good recitations from Mr ,Gardner. The music consisted of piano (Mr Ewing), violin (Mr D. Derricourt), and was first-class. Altogether, a very pleasant and evening’s amusement w T as provided.
